Joel and Krista
Exactly 11 years ago this past June, Joel and Krista were a newly married couple being commissioned in front of their church as missionaries. Since then, they have hiked into the jungles in India to bring aid to Christians hiding from radicals, climbed down into sewers in Romania to document human trafficking, attended a secret graduation of pastors in a seminary in Caribe, and recorded the worship of an underground church in North Africa for a radio ministry.
God has now settled Joel and Krista as a missionary couple in San Jose working at The Spanish Language Institute as student and faculty counselors and as the chaplain. Based upon the Institute’s need for counseling and based upon the distinctive abilities and training of Joel and Krista McCutcheon this has become a vibrant ministry. They work with English speaking students who are learning Spanish to be able to serve on mission, primarily in Central and South American countries. Joel and Krista serve as student advisors but also provide much needed Christian counseling for the students who are in their first long-term trip out of their home countries. Typical counseling areas are marriage, family relations, sexual purity, spiritual growth, and missionary vision. Joel and Krista provide new student orientation for each new class of students. Joel also serves as the Institute’s Chaplain and leads three Spiritual Renewal weeks each year for the students and alumni of the Institute.
Having recently adopted two Costa Rican girls into their family, Kati who is age 13 and Sofi who is age 10, they have the normal needs of a four person family plus the additional needs for schooling for the girls, health insurance in a foreign country, and a cost of living in San Jose that rivals large U.S. cities. While Costa Rica may sound like a paradise to some of us, you must understand that the McCutcheon’s face extreme security problems and they have been robbed a number of times, once losing everything including passports.
